Brooding On

Goat vs. Dog

For those who've been wondering how the goats are acclimating to Molly, well, they're not.

We figured they were under enough stress during last week's snow, so we kept them separate.  Today (the kids' first day back to school in over a week), the snow was melted enough for me to get Molly over to the farm for a good walk.  I thought I'd try to walk her enough to calm her down, then bring her home and let her back into the field with the goats and see whether she'd play nice.

You can see from this video what happened.  Her intentions are good:  she's just looking to play.  She singles out the smaller ones, especially Star, and nips at their hind legs and, weirdly enough, their teats.  What's up with that?  Razz is the only one who will fight back at all, headbutting a little to protect her daughter.  But, despite my cheering, she's yet to get Molly good enough to convince her to leave the herd alone.

Does anyone have any suggestions for helping these guys to get along?  A guardian animal who doesn't get along with the animals she's supposed to be protecting is a BIG problem!
